What is compression therapy?

Compression therapy is a treatment option for soft tissue wounds caused by poor circulation, referred to as chronic venous wounds. These types of injuries often affect the lower legs, ankles, and feet, due to chronic conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or diabetes.

Compression therapy uses specialized stockings, wraps, and garments to apply controlled pressure to the upper or lower limbs. This type of pressure promotes circulation and supports healthy blood flow through the body.

The team at Midwest Wellness and Wound Care has extensive knowledge of the proper application of compression therapy to help prevent, improve, and heal complex and slow-healing wounds.

Do I need compression therapy?

Compression therapy is beneficial for anyone who suffers from poor blood flow in the extremities. Even if you don’t have signs of venous disease or insufficient blood flow, you may benefit from compression therapy.

Compression therapy could benefit your health if you:

  • Have chronic, slow-healing wounds in your extremities
  • Have varicose veins or spider veins
  • Have PAD or peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
  • Have leg or ankle swelling
  • Have chronic conditions, such as diabetes or lymphedema
  • Have discoloration in your lower extremities
  • Are regularly on your feet for long periods
  • Are pregnant

In some cases, the team may recommend compression therapy after surgery or some vein treatments.

How does compression therapy work?

Compression therapy applies a constant, gentle pressure along the entire length of the limb being treated. This pressure supports the blood vessels of the limbs, which are weakened and unable to effectively move blood through the arm or leg and back to the heart.

Without the active movement of blood through the tissues of the extremities, tissues don’t receive blood and oxygen. Reduced blood flow makes healing difficult and is the underlying cause of chronic venous ulcers that are slow or nonhealing.

Compression therapy helps offset weakened vessels, improves blood flow, and promotes healing in the limb.

What are the benefits of using compression therapy?

Aside from improved healing, compression therapy is a beneficial part of your treatment plan because it:

  • Is simple and effective
  • Is cost-effective
  • Strengthens veins
  • Is noninvasive
  • Is painless
  • Improves overall circulation
  • Decreases swelling in lower legs and feet

The specialists at Midwest Wellness and Wound Care determine how to improve your circulation and heal your wounds using specialized compression products.
